Description:Ernie Mott (Cary Grant) is a drifter who only decides to stick around the family business when he finds out his widowed mother (Ethel Barrymore) has cancer. They get along OK, but they're very poor. Ernie decides to throw in with the local gangster, not realizing Ada (June Duprez) is his ex -wife. Meanwhile, Ma decides to become a fence. When Ernie is arrested for being involved with the gangster, it leads to cops to the Mott's shop where they find stolen goods. Ma is taken to a prison hospital where she dies. Ada decides it's easiest to go back to her ex. Ernie goes to Aggie (Jane Wyatt), the girl next door who loved him all along.

Review - None But the Lonely Heart

First of all, the part played by Cary Grant was written for a teenager. They throw in a few lines to make it clear that Ernie is in his mid-30's, but his dialogue and behavior are still teen-like. It's very weird casting.

Duprez and Wyatt were good in their roles, as were the other actors, but the movie was trying to be depressing and succeeded. Very non-typical for Grant.
