Description:Michael O'Hara (Orson Welles) runs into beautiful Elsa Bannister (Rita Hayworth) and becomes enchanted. Against his better judgment, he signs onto the crew of the yacht of Elsa's husband, lawyer Arthur. Also along for the cruise is George, Arthur's law partner. It's an odd bunch, and Michael keeps wanting to leave but his attraction to Elsa overrules his better judgment. George offers Michael $5,000 for pretending to kill him. (Michael wanted the money to run away with Elsa.) George really wanted to kill Arthur, but ends up dead instead. Michael is put on trial and judged guilty, but escapes, first to a Japanese theater and then to a carnival house of mirrors. Arthur and Elsa follow him and shoot each other. Michael goes free.

Reviews for The Lady from Shanghai

Review - Lady from Shanghai, The

Welles was up to his usual tricks—odd lighting, odd tricks with sound, odd camera angles, and bizarre sets. Rita was stunning, but odd to see her with short blonde hair. The plot was nonsense, made even more difficult to understand by the fact that I didn't care what was happening. None of the characters was remotely sympathetic. Welles' Michael looked far too old and dumpy for the role he played. He was supposed to be the innocent party, but he was so stupid that I couldn't root for him either.
