| Description: | Civil War veteran Captain Jefferson Kidd (Tom Hanks) makes his living going town to town around Texas and reading newspapers. He finds a young girl, Johanna (Helena Zengel) in the woods and discovers that she was captured by the Kiowas years before and is now being returned to her relatives. But the man taking her is killed by outlaws. With no other way to get her there, Kidd decides to do it himself. The girl speaks no English, but on the journey they come to understand and love each other. They have to face various dangers—white slavers, a buffalo hunter who has set up a kingdom of slaves, a dust storm. Johanna's relatives aren't excited about getting the child. Kidd goes home to San Antonio to visit his wife's grave. He realizes he misses Johanna and returns to get her and adopt her. |
