| Description: | Jessica Drummond (Barbara Stanwyck) is a wealthy widow in high society in Chicago. With her husband dead, her two sons off at private school, and her old-fashioned mother trying to force her to be a conventional widow, Jessica is lonely. She accepts a friend's invitation to go skiing. She meets Major Scott Landis (George Brent), an accomplished soldier who's a bit of a playboy. They spend their days together until Jessica heads home. Landis is stationed in Chicago, and when Jessica finds out she arranges a meeting. Landis tells her he isn't looking for marriage. Jessica is afraid at first but soon embraces the friendship. Her mother, her friends, and eventually even her sons are scandalized. Jessica decides to be independent for the first time ever. When Landis has to report to New York, Jessica plans to go with him but realizes she has a duty to her sons. She says goodbye to Landis at the station, and her tells her he's changed his mind and is returning to marry her. |
