Description:The Goss brothers, Violet (really) and Cottonwood (Harry Morgan) and their mother, Annie (Marjorie Main) rob a train in Oklahoma. They think it's OK because it's a Yankee train and they're still fighting the Civil War (even though it's 1901). Marshal Lloyd "Rich" Richland (James Craig) heads west to find the robbers. He arrives in town just as crooked sheriff Tatum tries to settle a vendetta against the Gosses. Rich helps the Gosses, and they invite him back to their ranch. Along for the ride is Mary Lingen (Donna Reed), stranded in town with no money. The Gosses treat their visitors well and Rich and Mary get to liking them, even though they suspect that they're the robbers. The Gosses ask Rich to help with their next robbery, so he reveals who he is. They get the jump on him. But just then Tatum shows up at the ranch and shoots Annie. Rich agrees to go into town and help the boys get Tatum. They do, but Violet is also killed. Cottonwood agrees to give himself up.Mary decides she's in love with Rich and stays with him.

Review - Gentle Annie

It didn't make a lot of sense. And it was impossible to see Harry Morgan as a train robber and tough guy. James Craig played Rich like he was an athlete in his first-ever movie role. But Donna Reed, 23 at the time, was lovely, so there was that.
