Description:Dramatized version of the real story of Al Schmid (played by John Garfield), a Marine who fought off 200 Japanese soldiers in a night attack on Guadalcanal but was blinded in the process. He is engaged to Ruth (Eleanor Parker), but feels that he 's no good to her blind, so he tries to break it off. But a nurse and Al's Marine buddy Lee conspire with Ruth to bring Al to his house instead of to the hospital. After an evening of arguing, Al finally decides to marry Ruth and get on with life. He wins a medal for bravery and gains some sight in one eye.

Review - Pride of the Marines

I would have rated the movie higher—I liked the characters, particularly Ruth. But the bit about Al whining that he was no good anymore, while probably true to life, went on too long in the movie and just got irritating.
