Description:The Army stages the dismissal of Rick Leland (Humphrey Bogart), but really he's going undercover. He boards a Japanese ship sailing for the Panama Canal. On board he meets Dr. Lorenz (Sydney Greenstreet), who turns out to be working with the Japanese on a plot to bomb the Canal. When Lorenz becomes convinced that Leland can be bought, he offers him money for the plans to the defense of the Canal (where Leland served in the Army). There's double-crosses and near escapes for Leland, but in the end he manages to foil the plot and catch or kill the bad guys. Mary Astor is along as Alberta Marlow, Leland's love interest. Her father is the unwilling dupe on whose plantation the Japanese plan to launch their attack.

Review - Across the Pacific

Interesting enough. I caught on to the fact that Leland was a spy from the very start. And Mary Astor wasn't nearly attractive or sexy enough to be the seductive woman who Leland fell for at first glance and kept loving throughout the movie. In fact, I thinks she's rather funny looking.
