Description:John Sands (Charlton Heston), salvage expert, comes across a ship, the Mary Deare, drifting at sea. He boards and thinks, at first, that it's abandoned. But then he meets Gideon Patch (Gary Cooper), acting captain, who is attempting to ground the ship in some rocks. Realizing that the ship is sinking and there's no other choice, Sands helps. They're rescued, and there's an inquiry about the wreck. The owners, and chief officer Higgins (Richard Harris) are trying to frame Patch and make him responsible. Patch insists that Harris was trying to sink the ship because the jet engines, which were supposed to be in the hold, had been sold to China. The inquiry goes against Patch. Meanwhile, the ship is discovered and an attempt is being made to refloat it. Higgins is aboard, and Patch realizes he's going to try to sink it once it's refloated, to hide the evidence. Patch and Sands sneak aboard to look in the hold. Higgins attacks them but is overcome. The authorities come and prove Patch right.

Review - Wreck of the Mary Deare, The

Well acted, but slow moving. Ultimately, it never really made me care whether Patch was telling the truth or lying, although it was pretty evident from the way the characters were played that he was correct from the beginning. In fact, the resolution was so obvious once the facts were out, that the plot had to create mystery by pointlessly obscuring facts.
