Description:Joe Maybe (Audie Murphy) robs a bank. The marshal chasing him shoots his horse but then falls off a cliff, so when Joe rides into the next town, the judge (Walter Matthau) mistakes him for the dead marshal and makes him marshal in the town. The next day, Tessa (Gia Scala) shows up. She knows who Joe is — she's the girl of another outlaw — but before she can reveal his identity, Joe tells her to be quiet and informs the judge that they're married. Tessa's man, Teeler (Henry Silva) plans to rob the bank in that town, but Joe plans on beating him to it. By the time Teeler arrives, Joe has changed his ways. But at the same time, the judge knows who he is and figures he and Teeler are in cahoots. Teeler robs the bank, and Joe chases him and brings him and the money back. The judge forgives him and tells him to stay marshal, and he marries Joe and Tessa.

Review - Ride a Crooked Trail

Weird movie. Matthau was good as the third-billed marshal. Scala was lovely as Tessa, and for the most part, played the part convincingly, but the script didn't give her much to work with. Murphy played the marshal with a weird hesitant deference and looked like he wasn't sure he was in the right movie. Silva has the charisma and acting ability of a two-by-four.
