Description:Based on the autobiographical novel by teenager Miles Franklin (named Sybylla Melvyn in the movie, played by Judy David). She's an outspoken, unconventional girl who hates her life in the Australian outback. Her mother sends her to her grandmother's in hopes of taming her and finding her a husband. She meets Harry Beecham (Sam Neill), heir to an estate, and they fall in love. But when Harry proposes, Sybylla turns him down because she wants to be independent and pursue her career. The movie pretty much ends there, except to say that the novel was published, and leaves her living back on her parents' farm where he dad spends all the family money on alcohol.

Review - My Brilliant Career

Of course the feminists love this movie/book because it's about a woman who rejected marriage to be "independent." But it just made her seem selfish. Harry told her she could have anything she wanted, so why couldn't she have written and been a wife? Whatever. It's significant that I didn't care enough about the character to read the novel.
