Description:Editor Margot Sherwood (Myrna Loy) pretends that she's married to, but estranged from, a man she met on vacation. She does this to put of potential suitors and to be taken more seriously at her job. Her boyfriend Philip (Lee Bowman) tries to get her to divorce her "husband" and marry him. Margot meets artist Jeff Thompson (Melvyn Douglas) by mistake, and they go out to dinner. Jeff likes Margot and begins talking marriage. When Margot tells him she's already married, he investigates and discovers she's lying. To get back at her, he shows up at her house and pretends to be her husband. For some reason, Margot decides that the only way to get rid of Jeff is to marry him and then divorce him so she can marry Philip. They all end up on a train, where Philip attempts to get Jeff to sign the divorce papers. But by this time, Margot has decided she loves Jeff, and when he gets off at his stop in Ohio the next morning, she gets off with him (after wiring ahead and telling Jeff's parents that he's gotten married and is bringing his bride home).

Review - Third Finger, Left Hand

I wanted to like this movie, but the premise was just too stupid and it kept getting stupider. When Jeff shows up and pretends to be Margot's husband, why doesn't she just pretend to divorce him? Why would she need to actually get married to him in order to get out of her fake marriage? Or, and here's a puzzler, why didn't she just tell everyone the truth—that she was never married in the first place and that Jeff is just an imposter? All that in addition to the usual rom-com problem that the two people had not spent remotely enough time together to fall so deeply in love with each other, nor, in this movie, was anything shown that would give them a reason to.
