| Description: | Webster (Ryan O'Neal) is a computer programmer who gets sick of seeing corporations legally stealing from people. He quits his job and becomes a jewel thief known as the chess bandit. On his first heist, he finds incriminating papers and blackmails the owner into introducing him to other people with jewels. He meets Laura (Jacqueline Bisset), society girl, and tells her frankly what he does. She falls in love with him and even helps him. Insurance investigator Dave Reilly (Warren Oates) figures out that Webster is the thief, but can never prove it. He gets fired from the insurance company, but continues to pursue Webster, finally catching him at a robbery. Reilly calls the cops, but the two men have been chasing each other around so long they've come to like each other, and when Webster runs off, Reilly lets him go. |
