Description:Mr. Chips (Robert Donat) is a Latin teacher for 63 years at Brookfield Boarding School. He starts out shy and retiring, and to gain control of the boys, becomes strict and, and a result, unloved. When he's about 50, a colleague convinces him to take a walking tour through Europe. He meets Katherine (Greer Garson) a woman half his age, when he climbs a mountain to rescue her (although she didn't need rescuing). They get to talking and Chips, for the first time, feels free and relaxed. Katherine sees his warmth and qualities that he's kept hidden, and before the trip is over, they are engaged. Realizes he's risked missing out on life, he changes his attitude, and, with Katherine's help, becomes popular. She predicts he will one day be headmaster. Not long after their marriage, Katherine dies in childbirth. Chips stays on until he's old. He retires, but when WWI begins, the lack of suitable staff results in him being asked to return—as head master. He's still involved with the school and the students when he dies—having lived a rewarding life.

Review - Goodbye, Mr. Chips

Smaltzy and corny the way it was shot, as was normal for the 1930s, but still warm. Garson was amazing in her role and even got an Oscar nomination although she was only on screen for about 30 minutes.
