Reviews for The Woman in Red
Review - Woman in Red, The
Not much too this one. Just a typical mid-30s-style drama, simplistic and overly dramatic. Stanwyck was good as always.

| Description: | Shelby (Barbara Stanwyck) is a rider for Mrs. Nicko's (Genevieve Tobin) stable of horses. Nicko has her eye on Johnny Wyatt (Gene Raymond), heir of an upper-crust but financially destitute Long Island family. When Johnny opts for Shelby, Nicko fires here. Johnny takes Shelby back to Long Island where she is shunned by his family. They decide to open a horse boarding and training center on the family estate, but they need money. Shelby turns to Gene Fairchild (John Eldredge), a wealthy friend who likes her. When Johnny is away, Gene invites Shelby to a party on his yacht, but things don't go as planned, and the only others who show up are a drunken rich guy and his drunk mistress, an actress. Honorably, Gene determines to drop off Shelby at the next port, but before that can happen, the actress falls overboard and drowns. Gene is charged with murder but refuses to ruin Shelby's reputation by saying she was on the yacht. Nicko knows and keeps dropping hints, still trying to win Johnny and discredit Shelby. When it looks like Gene will be convicted, Shelby rushes to the court room and testifies for him, although she knows it will likely end her marriage to Johnny. Gene is acquitted, and Johnny turns out to be true, sticking with Shelby in spite of what his family thinks. |
