Description:Evie O'Connor (Marsha Hunt), typist at a uniform factory, writes a letter to a soldier asking him to be a pen pal, and slips in in the pocket of an army shirt. It's received by Edgar Larson (John Carroll), a handsome womanizing lout, who wants no part of it. His friend, the much-less-impressive-looking John McPhearson (Hume Cronyn) grabs it and begins a correspondence with Evie. When she sends her picture, he falls in love. But she thinks he's big and strong (because she put her first letter in a large shirt). He sends her a photo of Edgar in return. When he goes to New York, Evie wants to meet him. He shows up, pretends to be Edgar, and they have a wonderful night together. The real Edgar snoops through John's stuff and finds Evie's photo. He shows up at her apartment and starts making moves on her. She realizes he's not at all like his (John's) letters, but when in a light moment he mentions marriage, Evie accepts. John is crushed. The marriage is avoided when the unit is sent overseas. John stops writing, thinking Evie is in love with Edgar. She goes to John's house to find out what happened to him and realizes that she's been fooled. But she also realizes that she fell in love with the guy who wrote the letters (John), not the big lout (Edgar). John comes to her door and tells her John stopped writing to her because he died a hero. He's about to leave when she lets him know she knows who he really is and they embrace.

Review - A Letter for Evie

Actually a really sweet movie. I can't remember seeing Marsha Hunt, with her girl-next-door beauty, before, but she carried this movie. I would have given it a higher rating if it had been played a bit more straight. But there's a scene in the middle where John (Hume Cronyn) pretends to be drunk to keep Edgar from being alone with Evie that was silly and out of character for the character, if that makes sense.
