Description:Fay Cheyney (Joan Crawford) hooks up with Charles (William Powell) and a gang of thieves in a scheme to steal a string of valuable pearls from the Duchess (Jessie Ralph). To do this, she takes a voyage and ingratiates herself with the Duchess's friends, particularly Lord Kelton (Frank Morgan) and Lord Dilling (Robert Montgomery), both of whom fall in love with her. She gets invited to a weekend at the Duchess's estate, during which both lords propose to her. She is sorry she agreed to the robbery, since she's decided she actually likes the Duchess and her friends, but out of loyalty to Charles, she goes through with it. Dilling figures out what is going on and catches her in the act. Because of his love for Fay, he hesitates to report her, but Fay, wanting to get out of her situation, reports herself. Charles makes a deal with the detective to take the fall if Fay can go free. Dilling, in spite of knowing what Fay is, proposes again, and she accepts.

Reviews for The Last of Mrs. Cheyney

Review - Last of Mrs. Cheyney, The

I have generally avoided Joan Crawford movies, but she was good in this one. Montgomery was also good. Powell was rather wasted. There was a silly bit about Lord Kelton writing Fay a letter to propose in which the misdeeds of the Duchess and all her guests were revealed. The guests show themselves willing to pay almost any price to get the letter back. Fay negotiates a large settlement, then rips up the letter and the check. It's sort of a "throw the first stone" bit, but doesn't really make sense or fit in the movie.
