Description:Set in the early 1800's in Ohio. When Davey's (William Holden) wife dies, he goes to the fort and buys Rachel (Loretta Young), an indentured servant, to do the chores and teach his son. Although they get married, Davey treats her like a servant. Friend Jim (Robert Mitchum) stops by, and he's immediately attracted to Rachel. She responds to his kindness. When Davey sees this, he gets jealous. The two men fight and compete for Rachel, but she gets mad and doesn't want either of them. Shawnees attack and the three hole up in the cabin. When help finally arrives, Jim realizes Rachel isn't going with him. He leaves, and Davey (finally) kisses Rachel and begins treating her as his wife.

Review - Rachel and the Stranger

Holden's character was such a stupid jerk that it was hard to take. Mitchum was good in his role until the silly fighting scenes. Young, as Rachel, was excellent as the woman with pride but not a lot of options.
