When Nick takes her home for a family wedding, his family quickly makes it clear to her that she's not "the right kind of people." Nick's mother Eleanor (Michelle Yeoh) hires a private detective and finds out that Rachel's father wasn't married to her mother. Rachel fights back against the pressure for a while, then give up and leaves. Nick follows and proposes, but Rachel realizes that if she marries Nick, he'll resent her for making him leave his family. But she also knows, and tells Eleanor, that if she doesn't marry Nick, he'll resent Eleanor. Review - Crazy Rich Asians

I liked the characters of Rachel and Nick, but the lifestyle of the rich in Singapore was totally unattractive to me. They talked about the importance of family, but all they cared about was appearing wealthy.
