Description:Biff Grimes (James Cagney) is in love with Virginia Brush (Rita Hayworth), but so is every other guy in town. He pursues her, but constantly finds himself on the outs to his best friend Hugo (Jack Carson). Biff keeps ending up with Amy (Olivia de Havilland), Virginia's friend. She likes Biff, but he's still hot for Virginia. Virginia breaks a date with Biff and marries Hugo, and before long, Biff marries Amy. Biff works as a milkman while learning dentistry on the side. Virginia, always the flirt, convinces Hugo to give Biff a job in his contracting company. When a scandal breaks regarding inferior materials, Biff is left holding the bag and goes to prison for five years. Amy waits for him, and when Biff sees her, he begins to realize what a good wife she is. They struggle along, and then Hugo shows up, needing a tooth pulled. Biff knows that if he puts Biff under, he'll be tempted to kill him. When he sees how unhappy Hugo and Virginia are, he realizes that's revenge enough—although he does pull Hugo's tooth without pain-killers. He finally realizes that he and Amy are happy.

Review - Strawberry Blonde, The

The movie got high ratings for the performance of Hayworth as the stunning flirt and for de Havilland, as the outspoken but faithful wife. That part I agree with. But I don't like Cagney and thought he was totally unlikable here, which is too bad. Amy deserved better. For the record, Hayworth was the more stunning, but de Havilland, pretty in her own right, was more attractive for her personality.
