Description:During the Civil War, Confederates robbed a Union wagon trail, made off with $1 million in gold, and hid it in the desert. Captain Matt Martin (Robert Fuller) is tasked with bringing it back. Confederate Joe Barlow (Dan Duryea) agrees to take him to the hiding place in return for a pardon for crimes committed before the war. Martin also picks four others to help, including Krausman (Claude Akins) and O'Rourke (Noah Beery Jr.). Before they even get started, they also get saddled with Memphis (Jocelyn Lane), a prostitute who's been kicked out of town. Barlow can't be trusted and repeatedly tries to convince one or another of the men to join with him to take the gold. Martin also has to deal with Indians (the gold is hidden on their land), outlaws, and running out of water. Barlow kills two of the men. Krausman, looking for revenge for his wife and daughter, attacks 10 Indians by himself and is killed. Barlow takes off with the gold, the water, and Memphis. Martin and one other man follow and manage to kill Barlow. The movie ends with Martin putting his arm around Memphis.

Review - Incident at Phantom Hill

Fuller was pretty good as Capt. Martin. And there were a surprisingly large number of recognizable actors in what was a pretty boilerplate western. Jocelyn Lane was around just to look like Jocelyn Lane. Her portrayal of her character as a pouty, vindictive prostitute was annoying — the woman just can't act. There were more holes in the plot than I have time to list, and it all added up to a very forgettable movie.
