Description:WWI soldiers put on a variety show (based on a real show from that war). Twenty years later, their sons put on a similar show. It's mostly musical numbers. What sliver of a plot there was involved dancer Jerry Jones (George Murphy) who was injured in WWI, then helped put on the WWII show with his son Johnny (Ronald Reagan). Johnny is in love with Eileen (Joan Leslie) but refuses to marry her because doesn't want to leave her a war widow. That is until the night before he's employed when she shows up with a chaplain and tells him they should get married because America is a free country where people can do what they want.

Review - This Is the Army

A few famous numbers—Kate Smith's God Bless America> and Irving Berlin's I Hate to Get Up in the Morning. Berlin actually wrote all the numbers, but he couldn't sing much. The plot was too thin for any character development, and the songs involved far too many soldiers in dresses for my taste.
