At first he keeps this from Claire, but when the authorities arrive, he has to rescue her and take her along. The deal with angry citizens, quicksand, and pursuing soldiers. At one point, Tom prevents the president from killing a young boy who finds them. But then Tom himself kills a young soldier when they are temporarily captured.
