| Description: | Ex-con man Nick Blake (John Garfield) gets out of the Army. He doesn't want to go back doing what he did, so he heads to California. But old acquaintances talk him into one last, big job—cozy up to rich widow Gladys Halvorsen (Geraldine Fitzerald) and con her out of her $2 million. Nick makes the connection and begins the scam, but complications arise when he falls for Gladys, and she for him. He tries to pay off his associates, but most of them don't go for it. Instead, they kidnap Gladys. With two loyal men, Al (George Tobias) and Pop (Walter Brennan), they rescue Gladys and break up the gang. Pop is killed. Nick ends up with Gladys (and, presumably, her $2 million). |
