Description:In Paris, Irene Vail (Jean Arthur) wants a divorce from her tyrannical, jealous husband Bruce (Colin Clive). To prevent the divorce, Bruce has his chauffeur go to Irene's room so she can be caught in a compromising position. Paul Dumond (Charles Boyer), a head waiter, overhears the plot and, in sympathy with Irene, pretends to kidnap her and steal her jewels. When Irene realizes what he's done, she falls for him, and he for her. When Bruce realizes the kidnapping wasn't real, he kills the chauffeur and threatens to blame it on Paul if Irene doesn't sail to America with her. Paul follows, and he and Irene eventually find each other again. But when Paul finds out that another man has been charged with murdering the chauffeur, he determines to return to Paris and stand trial. They sail on a liner owned by Bruce. Bruce, realizing that Paul probably won't be convicted, orders his captain to sail at full speed until the ship hits an iceberg. He hopes Irene and Paul will be killed. Finally, Bruce's conscience catches up with him and he confesses all. The ship doesn't sink, and Paul and Irene are together (and presumably wealthy if she inherits Bruce's money).

Review - History Is Made at Night

Jean Arthur was never lovelier, and Charles Boyer played his role well. But the plot was a bit much, the special effects were ... And the makers of the move were very proud of the title, but I thought it was a bit dumb.
