Good message, but the characters were more symbols of the views of various people than they were actual people to root for.

| Description: | It's 1933 in Germany. University Professor Roth (Frank Morgan) teaches that there is no difference in the blood of the various races. When the Nazis come to power, Roth's view soon gains their attention. Roth's daughter Freya (Margaret Sullavan) has two suitors -- Fritz (Robert Young) and Martin (James Stewart). Fritz is engaged to Freya, but when he follows the Nazi path, she dumps him. Martin, who refuses to go along with the group-think, has to flee to Austria. Professor Roth is arrested and soon dies in a concentration camp. He wife and youngest son (the other two turn Nazi) head for Austria with Freya, but when Freya is caught with her father's manuscript, she's prevented from crossing the border. Martin hears about it and goes back into Germany to get her. They attempt to escape over the mountains on skis, but a patrol, led by Fritz catches up with them. They make it to the border, but Freya is shot and soon dies. |
