Description:Denry Machin (Alec Guinness) is the son of a washerwoman who wants to rise in the world. Through clever schemes and opportunism, he worms his way into an accounting house, then into his own business, and then into wealth. Along the way, he schemes his way into the attention of a Countess (Valerie Hobson) who sponsors him in several businesses. He meets Ruth Eerp (Glynis Johns), a dance instructor who's even more on the make than Denry. She milks him for all the money she can get from him until he finally tires of her and starts paying attention to her poor friend Nellie (Petula Clark). He eventually asks Nellie to marry him on the eve of becoming the youngest mayor the town has ever seen. Ruth, abandoned by Denry, wastes no time finding a Lord to marry.

Review - Card, The

Cute. Seeing Denry's schemes were fun, especially since they never really went outside the law or hurt anybody. Still, the movie pretty much just played the same note over and over and so seemed a bit long.
