Description:Four sisters, living alone together in New Zealand after their parents die, have to deal with WWII and the influx of American soldiers.

Anne (Joan Fontaine) is very proper and judgmental about her sisters and Americans in general. Then she meets Capt. Richard Bates (Charles Drake) and falls in love. Before they can marry, Bates is called to duty and killed. Anne discovers that she's pregnant. After the war, Bates' parents in Oklahoma send for her and child, whom they consider family.

Barbara (Jean Simmons) was married for one month before her husband was called up and killed. She meets Captl Jack Harding (Paul Newman), whose job with the Marines is to investigate women who want to marry U.S. soldiers. Harding is divorced and cynical, but can't help being drawn to Barbara. After the war, he asks Barbara to return to America with him. She's reluctant because of his testimony in the trial (see below), but realizes that the real culprit was the war.

Delia (Piper Laurie) marries crude, oafish Shiner, the only may left in town when the war starts. When he gets called up, she moves to Wellington and takes up with a series of American men. She finally decides she wants to marry one of them. When Shiner gets back, she asks him for a divorce. In anger, he stabs Delia to death. Harding, who was investigating her request to marry an American, is called to testify at her trial. The movie doesn't say, but the inference is that his report on Delia allows her husband/murderer to go free.

Evelyn (Sandra Dee) is only 14 when the war starts. Her boyfriend goes to war. She flirts a bit with the Americans but when her boy comes home, she marries him.

Review - Until They Sail

To begin with, Fontaine and even Simmons (although I liked her character) were too old for their roles. It kept my interest, although I had to pay attention to catch the time jumps—in one scene Anne says she's pregnant. In the next, she's carrying a year-old baby.
