| Description: | Diane Lovering (Joan Crawford) is having an affair with Richard Field (Otto Kruger), a shipping magnate. When Richard's wife refuses to grant a divorce, Richard sends Diane on a sea voyage to Rio so he can work on convincing his wife. Onboard ship, Diane meets Mike Bradley (Clark Gable), who owns a ranch outside Rio. Mike pursues Diane, but she refuses to become more than friends—until, in Rio, he arranges for her to visit his ranch. She admits she loves him and agrees to marry him, but she feels like she owes Richard an explanation. When she gets back to New York, she finds out that Richard had gotten his divorce—at the cost of custody of his sons and half his money. Since he gave up so much for her, Diane feels that she must marry him. She writes to Mike and explains. A year later, Mike visits New York. Diane sees him in town and talks to him. They realize they're still in love, but Diane still doesn't think it right to leave Richard. Mike decides to make an issue of it, so he follows the Field's to an upstate cabin. Richard invites him in and is very kind. When Mike sees what kind of guy he is, he leaves. Bur Richard realizes what is going on and divorces Diane, allowing her to go south with Mike to his ranch. |
