Description:Rancher John Mason (John Wayne) receives a summons to visit an old gold mine, which he is half-owner of. When he arrives with Clarence, one of his men , he discovers several other people: 1) a gang of bad guys who hold the deed to the other half of the mine; 2) Janet Carter (Sheila Terry), whose father started the mine with Mason's father; 3) Several spooky old people with bug-eyes who wander around an old hotel; 4) a mysterious phantom who tries to scare people. After everyone takes turns capturing each other and getting away and riding their horses swiftly here and there, they all end up in the mine. The phantom turns out to be Janet's father, who is trying to get her half of the mine back to her. The bad guys try to get away with the secret gold. (I don't know where the secret gold comes from. The first half of the movie is all about the deeds to the mine and then, suddenly, everyone stops talking about the deeds and begins talking about hidden gold.). While all this is going on, Clarence stumbles around afraid and stuttering. Mason follows the bad guys and captures them with the help of his ranch hands (who had been summoned Lassie-style, by Mason's horse). And then Mason kisses Janet while Clarence stumbled around.

Review - Haunted Gold

If it sounds like a nonsensical muddle, it was. Half Western, half horror film with a plot that wanders about lost. Wayne was the only actor in the film who didn't say his lines as though he was reading them off upside-down cue cards.
