Description:British Capt. Edstaston (Peter O'Toole) travels to Moscow with the British ambassador and his fiancee Claire (Angela Scoular). He reports to Potemkin (Zero Mostel) and asks for an audience with Catherine the Great (Jeanne Moreau). When Catherine sees the captain, she decides she wants him for her lover. Twice he denies her and tries to flee with Claire. But Catherine invites everyone to a ball, full of drinking and dancing. During the course of the chaos, the captain is carried off, bound, to Catherine's torture chamber where they make love. Claire goes looking for him, and when she finds him, is ready to dump him, but the captain somehow makes her change her mind. They leave Russia, leaving Catherine reflective and disappointed. At least I think that's what happened.

Review - Great Catherine

Silly nonsense, enjoyable only for a little bit of impressive Russian dancing and the opening line, "Any resemblance between this movie and actual events is nothing short of a miracle," or words to that effect. Watching people drink and fall down isn't funny.
