Description:Karel Novak (Francis Lederer) is an immigrant from Czechoslovakia. When he is processed to enter the U.S., he finds that the amount of money he needs has been raised, so he gets sent back. He jumps ship, and in the process loses the little money he has. Wandering the streets of New York, he meets 19-year-old Sylvia (Ginger Rogers), a chorus girl with a kind heart. She gives him food and allows him sleep on the roof above the apartment she shares with her 11-year-old brother, Frank. The three become pals and work together for food and rent. Karel becomes a taxi driver, but when there's a strike and Sylvia's show closes, they are hard up. Frank is caught skipping school to work, so a judge sends him to an orphanage. Karel figures that if he marries Sylvia, Frank can live with them. But to get married, he has to be in the country legally. A shyster lawyer tells him he can help, but then turns him in to the authorities for a reward. Karel and Sylvia end up in a police station where several beat cops that they have befriended work. The cops arrest the lawyer on some dubious charges and fine him for the amount of money Karl needs to immigrate legally. The cops then call in some favors, and get Karel legalized and married to Sylvia so they can get Frank back.

Review - Romance in Manhattan

A sweet movie, so long as you suspend disbelief. The chaos of the ending, where everything was happening all at one in the police station weakened it some. Ginger, who was 22 when this was filmed, was lovely.
