Description:Gentleman Lt. McQuade (George Hamilton) is sent to a cavalry troop in Arizona to serve under Capt. Maddocks (Richard Boone). McQuade doesn't realize it, but years before his father disciplined Maddocks and saw to it that he could never rise above the rank of captain. Maddocks is gruff, bitter, but fair. He puts McQuade through the ringer to make a good officer of him. McQuade doesn't help things along. He takes up with Tracey (Luana Patten), the fiancee of another officer, whom McQuade was once engaged to. And he fights with Hanna (Charles Bronson), a womanizing enlisted man. But when the highest ranking Lt. (who happens to be Tracey's fiance) doesn't return from a scout, Maddocks has no choice but to trust McQuade. He sends him with a small troop to be bait for marauding Apaches, then rides in behind with the rest of the troop. Together they defeat the Indians and gain respect for each other. McQuade doesn't get the girl, however. Convinced that her infidelity led to the death of her fiance, Tracey decides to head back east.

Review - A Thunder of Drums

Boone's Maddocks was an interesting and arresting character. I didn't really care too much about anyone else in the movie, but the plot and directing were spot-on for this type of movie and it kept me interested throughout.
