Description:Gunfighter Warfield (Glenn Ford) returns home after several years' absence (it's never explained why he left), to find that his wife Angie and two daughters had recently been taken by Apaches. He also finds his neighbor, Forbes (Arthur Kennedy) who claims that Angie thought Warfield was dead and was about to marry him. Warfield sets out to find his family, and Forbes follows. The two men occasionally work together, but often are at odds. They are captured by Apaches and turned over to a Mexican who leads a gang of outlaws. The kill the Mexican, the come upon a town full of people dying of cholera. Next, they happen upon a gang of Army deserters who are trying to sell black market ammunition to the Indians. The Apaches attack. Warfield arranges for them to take one of the wagons of ammunition, then follows the wagon tracks. Forbes still follows Warfield. They come upon the Apache camp where Angie and her daughters are tied to posts. The two men sorta sneak in the back way and cut them loose, then ride off with all the Indian's horses. They take Angie to a doctor while the two men wait outside to see which one she will choose. When she chooses Warfield, Forbes gets mad and tries to get him to fight a duel. Warfield has just traded his gun for clothes for his family, so Forbes throws him a gun. But Warfield doesn't want to be a gunfighter any more, and in fact, has been avoiding killing anyone the entire movie (well ... almost). When Warfield refuses to pick up the gun, Forbes shoots him in the leg. He's about to kill him when the shopkeeper who just traded for Warfield's "evil gun" kills Forbes with it.

Review - Day of the Evil Gun

Too stupid. Why did Warfield abandon his family. Why did Angie marry a gunfighter in the first place, especially one more than 20 years younger. There was a weird Apache attack where they capture the two men just by riding next to them and lassoing all their weapons. Warfield made a big deal about not killing anyone, but the director must have forgotten because, near the end, he did kill and Indian. And the weird shift at the end, where Forbes, pretty much a calm, calculating guy most of the movie, suddenly gets all mad and shoots Warfield and tries to kill him. Did he thing Angie would go for that?

My review is a mess, I know, but so was the movie. It made no sense.
