Description:Capt. Jeff Eliot (Gene Kelly) was a P.O.W. during WWII. He escaped and was hidden and then helped out of Germany by a German family, the Lehrts. After the war, he goes back to see them and thank them. He learns that the parents died in a bombing, but daughter Wilhelmina (Willie), now 18, is still alive. Jeff tracks her down to a shady night club where she's working as an escort. Jeff offers to help her, but all she's willing to do is to take him to spend Christmas with friends in Austria. On the way back to German, Willie confesses that she works as a smuggler, and the trip was just to get some goods out of Germany. Soon after, American M.P.s pick up Jeff and tell him the whole story — ex-Nazi's are hoarding gold stolen during the war in hopes or resurrecting the Reich. Jeff agrees to another trip to Austria with Willie, and this time he figures out that the goods in the car are just a decoy — it's actually parts of the car that are made of gold. Jeff and Willie are captured by the Nazis, who decide to kill them by having a motorcycle slide into a pile of gasoline barrels while they are standing nearby. (Really?!). Jeff manages to get them away from this trap just as the M.P.s arrive. The round up the Nazis except for the new leader who leads them to Hitler's old house for a shoot-out before they capture him. Willie is injured but lives, and she and Jeff kiss as the end credits roll.

Reviews for The Devil Makes Three

Review - Devil Makes Three, The

The ending jumps the shark a bit with neo-Nazis running around in Hitler's old fortress, but I liked the characters, especially Angeli's Willie. The scenery in post-war, bombed-out Munich and Bavaria were stark, and the glimpse of life under the American occupation was interesting.
