Description:Mary (Bette Davis) works as a prostitute (here called "hostess" because of the code) at a nightclub owned by gangster Johnny Vanning. District attorney David Graham (Humphrey Bogart) tries to get Mary to testify against Vanning, but she refuses. Mary's kid sister, Betty, comes to town for a visit, and one of Mary's friends invites her to a party. Vanning immediately assumes she's one of her girls, and when she's not willing to perform, he slugs her and pushes her down the stairs to her death. When Mary finds out her sister is dead, she talks the other girls into testifying for Graham against Vanning. The gangster's thugs beat her up and cut her face, but she goes through with it, and Vanning is sentenced to 30 years in prison.

Review - Marked Woman

Based on the life of gangster Lucky Luciano, who was convicted on the testimony of prostitutes who were tired of being mistreated by him. Bogart was good as the DA. But Bette David, who I am not a fan of to begin with, was totally unbelievable as the hard-as-nails, sassy Mary. Her ridiculous dramatic overacting almost turned what could have been a good movie into a comedy. But not quite. Instead, it was just bad.
