Description:A gang of thieves led by Elizabeth (Melina Mercouri) and Walter (Maximilian Schell) plan to steal an emerald-clad dagger from a Turkish museum using the clever tools of inventor Cedric (Robert Morley). To get their gear from Greece into Turkey, they hire bumbling con man Arthur (Peter Ustinov) to drive their car across the border. He gets caught and is forced to inform on the gang by Turkish intelligence. The gang has to keep him around because of some supposed law that the person who drives a car across the border is the only one allowed to drive in in Turkey. Then, one of the gang members is injured and Arthur has to take his place. Along the way, he accidentally reveals that he's been passing info to the Turks. From that point on, he's accepted as one of the gang for some reason. The heist goes off as planned, but the head of intelligence figures out what happened based on the last note Arthur passed him before he turned.

Review - Topkapi

Ustinov is funny as the inept, frightened Arthur, but the story dragged on far too long. Also, Mercouri as a woman who was irresistible to men was just a farce. She was not only not seductive, she was decidedly unattractive.
