Description:George Steele (Pat O'Brien), museum art critic, is caught breaking into his own museum. He claims that he can't remember anything except being in (a nonexistent) train wreck. Traybin (Herbert Marshall), who's been hanging around Steele's girl Terry (Claire Trevor), keeps him from getting arrested. Steele begins retracing his steps to find out what really happened. He gets a colleague to help, but that colleague is soon discovered dead. Steele finally figures out that someone is stealing museum paintings and replacing them with forgeries. The thief then destroys the forgeries so everyone thinks the paintings are gone. Steele and Terry are caught by the thief and about to be killed when Traybin, who turns out to be with Scotland Yard, shows up and kills the thief.

Review - Crack-Up

I just didn't find it that interesting a story. I understand why the thief wanted Steele out of the way, and I understand how he made Steele think he was in a train wreck, but it never explained why that caused Steele to break into the museum.
