Description:Helen (Ida Lupino) is fed up with her empty life in an industrial town. When her kid sister Katie (Joan Leslie) meets the vaudeville comedy team consisting of Albert (Jack Carson) and Paul (Dennis Morgan), Helen sees her chance. She encourages Katie to marry Albert, then leaves her own husband and goes on the road with them. Before long, she manages to break up the team of Albert and Paul so Katie can have a bigger role. Soon, even that isn't enough, so she orchestrates a split between Albert and Katie. Katie's a big hit, but Albert can't deal with losing his wife and commits suicide. Helen keeps pushing and soon Katie is a big star. But Katie is fed up with it all. She meets Paul and goes off with him. After a couple weeks, they plan to marry. Helen shows up and puts her foot down. First, Katie has a big role in a big play coming up. Second, Helen is in love with Paul herself. But when Paul shows up on opening night, Katie calls it quits. She tells Helen she never wants to see her again and goes off with Paul. Helen, realizing the ride is over, jumps off a pier. She's rescued, but, for some reason, dies in the hospital.

Review - Hard Way, The

It's supposed to be a great movie, but it bored me. I found it too dramatic and cliched. Lupino over-acted. Leslie was lovely but unconvincing as the actress who conquered the world. Carson was just a dupe. Morgan was good as the guy who saw through Helen from the very beginning.
