Description:During the Depression, New Yorker Joe (Glenn Ford) is suckered into buying a "ranch" in Arizona. The purchase uses up all his money, so he has to hitchhike to get there. Along the way he meets drifter Tony (Richard Conte), Anita (Jean Rogers), a Spanish girl who is in the country without papers and is hoping to find relatives in California. The three travel together, mostly by hopping trains. They meet the Professor (Raymond Walburn), a hobo who used to be somebody. Tony gets shot while stealing food and loses his leg. Then the Professor meets Mamie, a saloon owner who claims to be an old flame (although the prof. doesn't remember her), and decides to stay. A sheriff discovers Anita's identity and is about to arrest her and Joe for aiding her. They avoid this by getting married. Joe doesn't want a wife, so Anita leaves. Joe goes to his ranch and finds out it's a shack on dry land. Anita shows up with household goods and the expertise to turn the ranch into olive groves. Joe decides he loves her after all.

Review - Heaven with a Barbed Wire Fence

Short and harmless. I could have done without the scenery-chewing Professor. Rogers, as Anita, was best and kept the movie going through the dry spots.
