Description:Walt Colby (Zachary Scott) is the lawyer of gangster Hap Richie. Walt doesn't realize that his girlfriend, Flaxy (Virginia Mayo), is Hap's mistress. When Hap has a woman killed, Flaxy is the prime suspect. Walt takes the blame, figuring he can get himself off in court, but Hap and Flaxy bribe a witness to testify against him, and Walt is sentenced to 20 years in prison. On the way, he overpowers the cop guarding him and escapes, injuring himself in the process. He's found by Nora Carson (Dorothy Malone), who "has a soft spot for runaways." They're caught by one of Hap's men but get away. Walt leaves Nora with a friend and goes looking for witnesses who can testify against Hap. A couple of bodies later, Walt goes to Flaxy's apartment. She schemes with him to trap Hap, but when Hap shows, Flaxy pulls a gun on both of them. In the confusion, Flaxy kills Hap. Walt then locks her inside her own apartment (by locking the door on the outside?). The cops pick up Flaxy for killing Hap. Walt wants to run off with Nora, but she wants him to turn himself in and take his punishment, then come for her.

In addition, Hap's hit man kept calling Walt "shamus," which means detective. He was a lawyer ...
