Description:A mashup of two of de Maupassant short stories, set during the Franco-Prussian War. A stagecoach travels across occupied France carrying three wealthy couples, a priest, the politician Cornudet (John Emery), and a laundress Elisabeth (Simone Simon). The other passengers despise Elisabeth, although they are willing enough to be her friend when it turns out she has the only food. At an inn, a Prussian officer nicknamed Fifi demands that Elisabeth eat with him. She despises Prussians and refuses, so he refuses to let the stage go on. The other passengers convince her to eat so they won't be inconvenienced, and after she does, they despise her again. On Cornudet sees her bravery, and when she gets off, he does to in order to apologize to her. The Prussians in this town decide to throw a party and get local girls to come. Again Elisabeth refuses, but when the Prussians threaten to shut down the laundry, which would throw a lot of people out of work, she agrees. She ends up with Fifi again, and when he gets too fresh, she stabs him with a knife and kills him. While all this has been going on, the village priest has been refusing to ring the church bell until a blow has been struck against the Prussians by the French. At Fifi's funeral, the new priest rings the bell because Elisabeth has struck the first blow. Elisabeth hides out in the church. Cornudet goes off to join the partisans but promises to return after the war for Elisabeth.

Review - Mademoiselle Fifi

OK. Nothing too exciting, especially since the censors demanded that Elisabeth be changed from a prostitute to a laundress. Eating dinner with a Prussian is something very different from sleeping with one. Alan Napier, who played Alfred on the Batman TV show was one of the wealthy dudes in the stage.
