Description:Lawyer Robert Blair (Michael Denison) is asked to help Marion (Dulcie Gray) and her mother, Mrs. Sharpe, who have been accused by a young girl, Betty Kane, of kidnapping her, locking her in the attic of their manor — the Franchise — and trying to force her to be their maid. Betty, who was missing for a couple weeks, has bruises on her body and details of the Franchise that could only be known by someone who had been inside, and Robert finds it very difficult to poke any holes in her story. While everyone else in town treats Marion and her mother as villains, Robert falls in love with Marion. Rose, a neighbor girl claims she heard screams coming from the Sharpe's house at the time Betty was supposedly there. Robert thinks he's going to lose the case until a woman comes to visit him. She's the wife of a man who picked up Betty in a bar and let her stay in his summer cottage. When the woman found out, she confronted Betty and they got in a fight. Robert proves that Betty was never in the house, that her friend Rose, who used to work for the Sharpes, told her about it. And Betty came up with the kidnapping story to cover the fact that she had been off with a man. Marion and her mother are found not guilty. Robert proposes to Marion, but she turns him down. She and her mother decide to move to Canada, and Robert decides to go along.

Review - Franchise Affair, The

I thoroughly enjoyed the Josephine Tey novel the movie was based on, and I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Great characters and mystery. It didn't feel like the plot was hiding evidence but rather that we were finding things out as the lawyer did.
