Description:Danny (John Garfield), shiftless bum, inherits two houses in the Hispanic community of Tortilla Flat. His buddy, Pilon (Spencer Tracy) is a moocher and con artist. He tricks Danny out of one of the houses and moves in with several friends, only to burn it down the next day. Everyone moves in with Danny. Meanwhile, Danny has fallen in love with Dolores (Hedy Lamarr) who wants to get married. Pilon is worried that, if Danny and Delores marry, he'll be kicked out of his house, so he tells lies and breaks them up. Danny gets drunk and injures himself. Pilon is remorseful and promises St. Francis that he'll do honest work if Danny gets better. Danny does, and Pilan uses his money to buy Danny a boat so he can go into business and marry Delores.

Review - Tortilla Flat

A bunch of lazy bums allow themselves to be manipulated by a moocher. Unless you like watching people be slimy to each other, there's nobody to root for here. Also, watching all these studio actors who I've seen in dozens of rolls, all of a sudden pretending to be Hispanics was weird. Even Hedy couldn't liven this one up.
