Description:Walter Hartright (Gig Young) is hired as a drawing instructor for heiress Laura Fairlie (Eleanor Parker). On his way to the estate, he meets Ann (also Eleanor Parker), a mysterious woman dressed in white. Walter is drawn to Laura, but also to her cousin/companion Marian (Alexis Smith), but soon discovers that mystery lurks. Count Fosco (Sydney Greenstreet), friend of Laura's uncle, is an ominous presence. He insists that Ann is an escapee from an asylum. When Laura's fiance Glyde shows up, Walter decides he should leave. Laura marries Glyde. When they return to the estate after the honeymoon, Ann shows up and approaches Laura to tell her who she is. When Fosco and Glyde burst in, Ann drops dead. Fosco and Glyde switch the two girls—claiming that is is Laura who died (which gives Glyde all her money). They put Laura (claiming she is Ann) back in the asylum. Walter returns and with Marian's help (because, suddenly, it's the two of them who are in love), rescues Laura, killing Glyde in the process. At the estate, Fosco's wife (Agnes Moorehead, who is really Ann's mother) kills him. Laura keeps her money. Walter marries Marion and, weirdly, lives at the estate with both Marion and Laura.

Review - Woman in White, The

Gig Young was horribly miscast as Walter. Otherwise, the actors and characters were fine, but the plot was far too complicated to make sense or be truly suspenseful. What can be accomplished in a 600-page Victorian novel can't be covered in an hour-and-45-minute movie.
