Description:A group of international citizens try to escape by bus from Hungary during the uprising. Among them are the British Diana Ashmore (Deborah Kerr) and her wounded lover, Hungarian freedom-fighter Paul (Jason Robards). At the border, they are stopped by Russian Major Surov (Yul Brynner) who immediately falls for Diana. She attempts to sneak herself and Paul to Austria by boat but are caught. Surov knows who Paul is and separates him from the group. The other detainees ask Diana to give herself to Surov as the only way for them to escape. She goes to him, they kiss, but (so far as the movie shows), that's all. The next morning the group is taken to the border. At the last minute, Surov drives up with Paul and allows him to cross with Diana. Moments later, Surov is killed by insurgents.

Reviews for The Journey

Review - Journey, The

A remake of Boule de Suif, by de Maupassant, about a prostitute who sleeps with a Prussian officer to buy the freedom of a group of refugees, only to be scorned by the very people she saves. In this movie, Diana played the part, although far as I could tell, she and Surov only shared a kiss. Brynner's Surov was certainly a more interesting character, even if Russian, than the mopey, temperamental Paul.
