Description:Air Force veteran Frank Enley (Van Heflin) and his wife Edith (Janet Leigh) and their son live near L.A. Edith doesn't know that, during the war, Frank, out of cowardice, told the commandant of a Nazi prison camp about an escape attempt by other Allied prisoners. All of the escapees were killed except Joe Parkson (Robert Ryan). When Joe finds out where Frank lives, he comes for revenge. Frank begins acting frightened and finally tells Edith what he did. She still loves him and wants him to go to the police. Instead, Frank runs. He meets Pat (Mary Astor), a prostitute who connects him with some shady characters who agree to kill Joe for money. It's all arranged at a train station, but Frank, to redeem himself, goes to warn Joe. At the last minute, he jumps in front of the killer's gun, saving Joe but dying himself. Joe goes off to tell Edith about Frank's redemptive act of heroism.

Review - Act of Violence

Well made, and the plot holds together pretty well without going too much to extremes. I'm not sure I understand why Pat took an interest in Frank, who was pretty much a basket case at that point, and I figured out how it had to end about half an hour before it actually ended.
