Description:During WWII, gung ho Lt. Joel Brady (Ray Danton) wants glory on Guadalcanal. He leads his platoon into danger and only escapes with two men. When one of them, Campbell, complains about Brady's leadership and decides to head off on his own, Brady shoots him. Sgt. Tom Sloan (Kerwin Mathews), the other remaining man is incensed. He goes to visit Campbell's widow, Ruth (Julie Adams), and falls in love. His feud with Brady continues when the Lt. shows up and courts Ruth's sister. On a reconnaissance mission, Brady attempts to leave Sloan on an Japanese-held island, but Sloan manages to catch the last boat out. He confronts Brady, accusing him of murdering Campbell, of abandoning him on the island, and of courting Ruth's sister because her family is wealthy. But before anything comes of it, Sloan is sent to Hawaii, and then to the attack on Tarawa. He has to take command of the platoon next to Brady's and finds himself alone in a bunker with him. Brady decides to prove he's really a hero and charges a Japanese bunker. He takes it out but is killed in the process. Sloan in injured, but makes it out alive.

Review - Tarawa Beachhead

OK. Watchable but nothing special. As with most short (77 minutes) B movies, there are jumps between scenes that leave a lot out. This movie would have been better with a final meeting between Sloan and Ruth, but the director wanted to end it with Sloan's comment, referring to Brady: "Who knows. Maybe it's guy's like him that win wars. Or start them ..."
