Description:Smart-talking hood Tommy Gordon (John Garfield) is arrested for robbery and attempted murder. He's sentenced to Sing Sing, where he confronts Warden Long (Pat O'Brien). Long figures that Tommy isn't as tough as he pretends to be, especially when he decides not to take part in a break-out attempt. Tommy's girlfriend Kay (Ann Sheridan) goes to Tommy's lawyer to plead for him to get Tommy out. The lawyer makes a move on her, and she jumps out of the car to save herself. She's injured, and Long allows Tommy to go see her so long as he promises to come back to prison. When Tommy finds out what happened to Kay, he determines to kill the lawyer, but Kay stops him. The lawyer then shows up. He and Tommy fight, and the lawyer is about to kill Tommy when Kay shoots him. Tommy flees, but when he sees in the paper that Long is about to be fired, he returns to prison. He's tried for the murder of the lawyer. Kay tries to tell what really happened, but Tommy insists he committed the murder and dies in the chair.

Review - Castle on the Hudson

Stupid. First of all, Tommy's character was so constantly smart-mouthed that he was just annoying. Second, if the lawyer attempted to rape Kay, causing her to jump out of a car, and then she killed him because he was about to kill Tommy, I'm sure she wouldn't have gotten much of a prison sentence, if any. There was no reason for Tommy to take the fall—not in the real world, anyway. The movie was played for melodrama, but at the cost of making sense.
