Description:Musician Pete Hammond (Tony Curtis) moves to New York, hoping to make it big. When he finds out that dancer Peggy Brown (Debbie Reynolds) is getting kicked out of the apartment he's moving into, and that she has nowhere to go, he invites her to share the room with her. They become good, platonic friends. Peter, naively goes to an audition and has his instruments stolen. He's offered a job on a cruise, but can only take it if he gets new ones. Peggy borrows money from her boss Nellie (Don Rickles), but in exchange, she has to agree to become and escort. But when she's given escort jobs, she doesn't show up. Nellie comes to rough her up just as Pete gets home. Together, they come up with enough money to pay Nellie off, but Pete gets beat up and loses his instruments. The police call to tell him his old instruments were found. Peggy figures she needs to move out, but Pete stops her because he's fallen in love.

Reviews for The Rat Race

Review - Rat Race, The

Certainly not the comedy it's billed as. It's a snarky, gritty look at the slime that is NYC. Curtis is good as the naive, good-hearted Midwesterner. Reynolds is great as the decent girl who has become hard but still won't cave to sleaze.
