Review - It Started with Eve
Robert Cummings as Jr. was just baggage — dull and uninteresting. But the byplay between Durbin and Laughton was great and, at times, hilarious.

| Description: | Jonathan Reynolds (Charles Laughton) is on his deathbed. His son, Jonathan Jr. rushes home to see his dad one last time. Jonathan insists that he wants to meet Jr.'s fiancee, but Jr. can't find her. Thinking his dad only has hours to live, he pays Anne (Deanna Durbin), a hat check girl, to pretend to be his fiancee. Jonathan and Anne hit if off — and then Jonathan recovers. Jr. figures out a way to get her out of the way, but when Anne finds out that Jonathan has contacts in the opera, she asks him to introduce her. Jr. has to explain all this to his fiancee, and when she protests, he ties once again to get Anne out of the way. Jonathan figures out what's going on, but he's grown to like Anne and conspires in several ways behind the scenes to get Anne to stick around, including taking her to a popular night spot and introducing her as Jr.'s fiancee. The real fiancee finally leaves, and Anne and Jr. get together, to Jonathan's delight. |
